Frequently asked questions
Getting started
Do I need a paid Substack to use StackSweller?
No — StackSweller works with free and paid Substack publications. You just need an active Substack account.
Does StackSweller work with multiple Substack publications?
Yes, if they belong to the same Substack account. Each StackSweller account connects to one Substack account, and the Publications card in Settings lists every publication that account writes for. Posts are synced from each publication you leave active. Notes publish from your Substack profile, so there is one notes queue per account. To manage a different Substack account, see the next question.
Can I manage notes for a client, as a ghostwriter or agency?
Yes. Set up a separate StackSweller account for each client and connect it to the client’s Substack account. The simplest way is the Chrome extension: in a browser where the client’s Substack is logged in, log in to the client’s StackSweller account, click the extension icon and choose Connect Account. That can happen on the client’s computer, or on yours if you already use their Substack login. If you look after several clients, give each one its own Chrome profile, because the extension connects whichever StackSweller and Substack accounts are logged in within that profile.
Notes then publish from the client’s own Substack profile. Connecting gives StackSweller a live login to the client’s account, so make sure they’re comfortable with that. Pressing Disconnect Substack in Settings deletes our copy at any time, and the client can also sign out of Substack everywhere to invalidate it at Substack’s end. See Disconnect or switch accounts.
There is no shared multi-client dashboard or team login yet. Each client’s account is managed on its own. If that matters to you, email us and tell us how many clients you run.
Connection & publishing
How does StackSweller log in to Substack?
With your Substack session cookie. Substack has no “sign in with Substack” option for third-party apps. The Chrome extension picks up the cookie for you, or you can paste it in by hand. We never need your Substack password. See Connect your Substack.
My Substack connection keeps dropping. Why?
Substack sessions expire from time to time, and signing out of Substack everywhere ends them early. When that happens, a red Substack Connection Expired card appears in Settings. To reconnect:
- Open substack.com and make sure you’re logged in
- Click the StackSweller extension icon, then Connect Account
Without the extension, click Update manually instead on that card and paste a fresh cookie. Full steps are in When the connection expires.
Why didn’t my scheduled note publish?
Possible reasons:
- Expired Substack connection — check Settings for a red Substack Connection Expired card
- Note was deleted — if a scheduled note is deleted before its publish time, nothing goes out
- Clock skew — if your device time is significantly off, it can affect scheduling
Failed notes show a red Failed badge in the Scheduled tab. You can retry publishing from there.
Can I schedule a lot of notes at once?
Yes. Import notes takes a text file of 3–100 notes and can drop them straight into your next available slots. If you use an AI assistant, the MCP bulk_schedule_notes tool does the same from chat. See MCP.
Can I edit a note after it’s been published?
StackSweller shows your published notes but doesn’t support editing after publishing. Go to substack.com to edit a published note.
AI generation
Will AI-generated content sound like me?
It depends on how you use it. Claude uses your audience description (set in Settings) to calibrate tone. The more detail you add there, and the more specific your prompts are, the closer the output is to your voice. Most users edit AI-generated notes before publishing.
Why is the AI generation button greyed out?
You’ve likely reached your monthly credit limit. Check Settings → Usage to see your balance. Credits reset on the 1st of each month, or you can upgrade your plan immediately.
Does StackSweller store my AI-generated content forever?
Yes — generated notes are saved as drafts until you delete them or publish them.
Scheduling
What timezone do scheduled times use?
Your configured timezone (Settings → General → Timezone). Make sure this is set correctly before scheduling notes.
Can I schedule long-form posts (not just notes)?
StackSweller manages scheduling for Substack Notes (short-form). Long-form posts are shown in the Posts section but are published directly on Substack, not through StackSweller’s scheduler.
What happens to my queue if I pause a slot?
Queued notes stay in the slot — they’re not deleted or rescheduled. When you unpause, the slot picks up where it left off.
Billing
How do I cancel my subscription?
Go to Settings → Billing and click Cancel subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your billing period; you keep full access until then.
Will I lose my data if I cancel?
No. Your notes, slots, and settings are preserved. If you resubscribe, everything is still there.
I was charged but can’t access premium features. What should I do?
Email [email protected] with your account email and we’ll sort it out promptly.
Privacy & data
Does StackSweller read my Substack subscriber list?
No. StackSweller accesses only the content you create (notes, posts) and aggregated engagement data (likes, comments, restacks). We do not access subscriber emails or personal data.
How do I delete my account?
Email [email protected] with a deletion request. We’ll delete your account and all associated data within 7 business days.
